Case Study: A Vancouver Do-Over

What happens when a remodel is disrupted by unforeseen setbacks? Some might just give up. One homeowner, Heidi, did not.

In the heart of downtown Vancouver, WA, a 104-year-old cottage has been transformed into a modern, eco-conscious home. The project, led by Sam Vilhauer of Vilhauer Construction, highlights how thoughtful design, innovative materials, and a commitment to sustainability can come together to create a home that’s both timeless and future-ready.

Respecting the Past

For Heidi, preserving the character of the neighborhood was just as important as building responsibly.

“I was looking for a siding product that would honor the aesthetic of the neighborhood and the house that was previously here,” shares Heidi. Sam took her challenge to heart: “We designed a home that looks like it’s been here for 100 years, but it’s built with today’s best practices—tall ceilings, high insulation, and energy-efficient systems.”

Built for Performance

Cedar Impressions is lightweight and easy to cut. That makes for a faster, safer install. It requires no caulking or painting, which reduces labor and long-term maintenance. Scratches don’t show because the color runs through the material. And it will not rot. Ever.

“It’s a superior product by far,” says Josh Williamson, of Western Edge Exteriors & Construction, who appreciates the Cedar Impressions attributes from the installer’s perspective. “You get the same look and feel as traditional cedar shake, but without the hassle. It’s great for homeowners, contractors, and installers alike.”
